The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
A discussion of cyberinfrastructure would be incomplete without noting the Mellon Foundation; their grants have made possible many of the advances covered within Academic Commons.
From their website:
"The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation currently makes grants in six core program areas: Higher Education and Scholarship; Scholarly Communications; Research in Information Technology; Museums and Art Conservation; Performing Arts; Conservation and the Environment.""Within each of its core programs, the Foundation concentrates most of its grantmaking in a few areas. Institutions and programs receiving support are often leaders in fields of Foundation activity, but they may also be promising newcomers, or in a position to demonstrate new ways of overcoming obstacles to achieve program goals."
"Our grantmaking philosophy is to build, strengthen and sustain institutions and their core capacities, rather than be a source for narrowly defined projects. As such, we develop thoughtful, long-term collaborations with grant recipients and invest sufficient funds for an extended period to accomplish the purpose at hand and achieve meaningful results."
"Together, the Foundation and the incubated entities have helped strengthen the basic information technology infrastructure so important to higher education today, and have been instrumental in developing standard applications and tools to greatly facilitate the preservation and sharing of important scholarly material that otherwise might not exist or be available only on a very limited basis."
"These incubated entities have become independent not-for-profit organizations with interests closely aligned to Mellon's."
