Supercomputers Abound!

In this report from The Chronicle of Higher Education, supercomputers are increasingly part of the cyberinfrastructure at campuses big and small. To reduce costs, faculty and technologists even construct their own from older machines. And for access to even more computing power, there's the NSF's TeraGrid, accessible through the Campus Champions program (which designates a professor at each participating campus
as a technical-support contact). This is a critical change, according to the article; it cites a 2006 report by the National
Science Foundation arguing that "'Problems of national need,' which
include protecting the electric-power grid, better health-care
delivery, sustainable energy, and faster transportation, will not be
solved unless more institutions and more professors can use
supercomputers for their toughest problems."
