Google Presentations

Folded neatly into Google Docs,
Google is at long last fielding its very own web-based presentation
application, the other major contenders I am aware of being Zoho and ThinkFree. (I omit SlideShare
because it does not provide editing functions.) The PowerPoint .ppt
file I imported to Google looked very nice--allowing for the customary
flattening of slide animations and multi-media content, of course. You
can edit an uploaded presentation without the quirky glitches that
plague the competition. You can also create a presentation from scratch
using one of a handful of passable themes. Overall, the editing
environment is minimalist and intuitive, with great collaborative
features including versioning and simultaneous editing. On top of that,
you can purportedly run a slideshow live over the web and communicate
with your audience using a chat session in sidebar. That feature did
not work for me in testing, but one must make the usual concessions to
an application in beta. Google falls short of the competition with
regard to 'mashability.' There is presently no utility to generate code
for embedded iframes or objects. Even still, it makes a dramatic entry.
