Collaborative web-based tools are gathering sophistication and traction. Digital Library Federation Director Peter Brantley points out that while Trinity College, Dublin, has adopted Gmail whole hog, the University of California at Berkeley, in a detailed report on Web tool offerings by Google and Microsoft,
finds that they are generally not quite ready for adoption. The report
suggests though that as the software improves, and as legal and privacy
issues are seriously addressed, it won't be long before many more
individuals and institutions will be collaborating using these online
tools.
