The blog Friends:Social Networking Sites for Engaged Library Services recently described a new Facebook application called (Facebook) Librarian. One feature of the application is that users can go straight from Facebook to an array of research tools including Open WorldCat, Google Book Search, Wikipedia,
etc. Users can rate the available resources or propose new
alternatives. The real social networking part of the story, though, is
that you can also ask a volunteer librarian for research help. With
university libraries already wondering how to integrate themselves into
students' web-driven research habits, one wonders if there is room in a
generic application like (Facebook) Librarian for localized links to
institutional resources.
