Online Study Group Admin Charged With Academic Misconduct

A student at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada is facing charges of academic misconduct / expulsion for his involvement with a chemistry study group on Facebook last term. The student in question claims no actual violations of the academic policy of the course in question were violated, however, the description / title of the group implied that members should post solutions to assignments, which would violate the course policy.
What is unknown at this point is whether a member of the chemistry faculty or administration at Ryerson checked the content of the group. According to the article, Ryerson officials have refused to comment during the processing of the case, which leads one to believe that the content went unchecked.
Regardless, the situation emphasizes the need for academics to heighten their awareness and become involved with social networking sites such as Facebook. Failure to do so my lead to false accusations and wrongful expulsion which may permanently damage a student's academic reputation.
