DESCRIPTION: Widgets, also known as gadgets, badges, modules or snippets, are mini-applications that run on your desktop or mobile device or can be embedded in websites. Small, fast and portable, widgets enable the aggregation of content (news, maps, calendars, bookmarks) and functionality (search, quizzes, chat) from a variety of sources. Widgets are endemic of the move away from closed environments of traditional course management systems and institutional portals to more open eco-systems of blogs, wikis and personal news aggregators.

This SIG will show how widgets are developed, discovered and added to web
pages, wikis, blogs and course management systems and how they are changing the
way curriculum is being constructed. We will share case studies of how teams of
developers and educators have worked together to create widgets for teaching,
learning and research. The day will end with roundtable discussions on how to
promote and deploy these tools at your institution.
